Once you schedule an Outreach Class we will mail you a confirmation as well as a general previsit guide. This guide is also mailed to teachers who schedule the other educational programs at the Aquarium such as a Sea Search class or general aquarium tour (you can check the Cabrillo Aquarium Web Site for more details). In addition we also have several previsit sheets that we will include on this Outreach web site. Please occasionally check on this site as we will also have other resources posted from time to time.

Often teachers will contact us regarding what to do with their class to prepare them for our visit. We usually suggest reading a story about animals in the sea to introduce children to what different animals live in the sea. There are also many books that we carry in our gift shop. Check your our own library at your school as many have wonderful collections of marine biology books for children.

In addition to our previsit sheets, we also have post visit handouts for our Fish Story, Fish Dissection, Whale, Squid Dissection, Fish Dissection, and Shark Class. These will be given to you in your classroom by the Outreach Instructor that completes the presentation.

Other Suggested Projects:

Some classes make dioramas before we visit to help the students understand what the sea animals look like and what they are called. Also we have observed fun art projects like construction paper octopus with eight arms and Cheerios cereal pieces for suction cups, sea urchins made of Styrofoam and toothpicks, jellyfish made of clear cups and saran wrap, and even construction paper sea stars with a stomach that can come out of its body. Furthermore, if you can include a general discussion of external anatomy while the students complete the project it often helps them relate form to function.
